[ The setting fire to Nanto(Nara) ]
Around the middle of the 12th century, a samurai named Taira no Kiyomori was powerful.
But it did not last long and the power gradually fell.
Around that time there were powers in the temples in Nara, and ordered the his child Shigehira to reduce the force.
Shigehira set fire to Nara in 1181.
Most buildings of Todaiji and Kofukuji are destroyed.
After a while the Taira family fell down.
After that, Todaiji was to be rebuilt by Chogen.
He gathered funds with donation, and taught artisans with his building technology.
He used big timbers when rebuilding the Great Buddha Hall and Nandaimon Gate, and he supplied them by himself from the mountains of Suonokuni country (currently the southeast half of Yamaguchi prefecture).

There is a bell tower on the way from the Great Buddha Hall to Nigatsudo Hall.
