The tourist spot that I will introduce today is Himuro-jinja shrine in Nara. I will also introduce the festival called Kenpyo-sai held there.
[ Himurojinja Shrine in Nara]
Currently, it is easy to get ice in the summer.
However, since there was no refrigerator and no ice machine in the past, it was very difficult to get ice in the summer.
In order to get ice in the summer, there was no choice but to save winter ice until summer.
The capital moved to the northern part of Nara prefecture in 710 AD.
That is Heijo Kyo.
And at that time the Emperor commanded to build an icehouse.
There is the Yoshiki River on the south side of Todaiji.
An icehouse was built at the foot of Kasuga mountain upstream.
The ice room is a room where winter-made ice is kept until summer.
With this ice room, the following year Ice has been delivered to the Emperor in summer.
The capital moved to Kyoto in 794 AD.
At that time the role of this ice room was over.
After that, a shrine was built to worship the god of ice near Todaiji Temple.
It is Himuro-jinja Shrine.
[ Kenpyosai of Himuro-jinja shrine ]
The ceremony called Kenpyosai is held on May 1 every year there.
Yesterday was the day of the ceremony.
Two ice pillars containing fish were dedicated in front of the temple.
People who are attending this ceremony are those who sell ice.
In the precincts I was able to get shaved ice free.
It was hot yesterday, so the shaved ice was very tasty.
I had Mango taste honey on the ice, but there were other strawberry flavored syrups.
There was also ice at the entrance of the shrine.
It is a quiet shrine in the usual way, but there are a lot of tourists on this ceremony day.
